Lymm travel to Preston on Saturday with both sides equal on points and requiring one point to be mathematically certain of National league rugby next season. Lymm are one place ahead in the table by virtue of having more wins.
The previous encounter at Lymm was played on a cold December day with a convincing win for Lymm. However, as everyone knows this is a competitive league and Preston will be out for revenge, so Lymm need to perform at their best to compete.
As far as I’m aware Lymm played their first fixture against Preston in the mid 80’s , when a fixture was hastily arranged on a Saturday morning as both Clubs had games cried off due to the weather. The game was played at Beechwood with Lymm prevailing 20-15 against a side that included the ‘Blackpool Tower’ England second row Wade Dooley. Another little known fact is that our DOR Adam Fletcher played two season for Preston 2000-2002 when he was a student at the local University.
Since that initial encounter Lymm have met Preston on a number of occasions in the League with Preston prevailing every time except last December, and the last time we played at Preston we were heavily defeated as Preston won promotion to the National Leagues.
The game on Saturday promises to be an exciting contest with Lymm coming off an excellent victory against Sheffield Tigers and Preston performing creditably at high flying Wharfedale, showing great spirit to come back from 31-0 to lose 31-21.
The kick off on Preston’s AGP is 2.30pm even though the clocks have gone forward!! , so don’t be late as we know most games in this league start at rip roaring pace!!
