In perfect conditions for rugby, Lymm welcomed Macclesfield to Beechwood for their Cheshire Cup semi-final. Having lost last year’s semi-final away to Stockport, expectations were high, after Lymm’s run of excellent performances and results so far this season.
After falling behind briefly, Lymm went into a 7-3 lead halfway through the first half. Macc were then issued with a yellow card, but within minutes Lymm received a card of their own – this time red, and the prospect of a long hard afternoon became even more likely, with both teams keenly contesting all areas of the pitch.
(The best bit news of news of the day, that followed later that night, was that the injured Macc lad had been discharged after precautionary scans at Warrington Hospital, with just soft tissue injuries – we hope he recovers swiftly).
As it turned out the remaining squad, rotating into the 14 positions on the pitch, put in a strong, committed and often highly skilled performance, with the large crowd helping to spur the lads on. It was very pleasing to see tries coming through the forwards and the backs alike, with Lymm adding 5 more tries to see out a very tense 38-18 victory.
Tries: Steele, Polec (2), Gillen, Yeomans, Cliffe
Conversion: Yeomans (4)
Onwards to the final which is against Anselmians, at Anselmians on Sunday 12th March – all supporters more than welcome.
