Lymm went into this match knowing that a performance like last week would result in a very one sided game. However you could sense that they were determined to right a wrong! The side welcomed back Jake Ashall from injury Tom Baker and Henry Baldwin from unavailability. The conditions were perfect for open rugby and with the floodlights on it looked a picture.
Lymm kicked off and from the beginning the defence was a different league from last week. Caldy tried to make headway but were met by a posse of tacklers. Lymm were making ground through the forwards with Jake Ashall and James Yates to the fore. Both sides were struggling to make any telling breaks but from a line out 20 metres out Caldy stormed through and scored an unconverted try in the corner, 0 – 5. This didn’t deter Lymm who continued to make ground. It was from a scrum 50 metres out the ball was moved wide and an overlap was created. Richie McEvoy put on the burners and dummied the full back to score an excellent try which Rhys Jones converted, 7 – 5.
Caldy aren’t top for nothing and after a period of pressure which Lymm had repelled, their classy full back ghosted through for a converted try, 7 – 12. That’s was the final score of the half which was fairly even with both sides producing good defence. At half time Lymm were confident with the slight breeze to their advantage would assist them.
HT 7 – 12
They started the half well and were making ground but a charged down kick resulted in a converted try against the run of play, 7 – 19. This only made Lymm increase the tempo and a great break from Jake Ashall put Lymm on the attack. They pounded the line and went close in a couple of occasions until finally Captain James Yates crashed over for a try converted by Rhys Jones, 14 – 19.
Sadly the unlucky Rhys would leave the field soon afterwards with what looked like a serious knee injury. Lymm continued to press and ferocious defence had Caldy teetering but they aren’t a top side for nothing. With ten minutes to go Lymm concede a penalty which resulted in a line out close to the Lymm 22 from which they moved the ball around well to find a chink in the Lymm defence to score a converted. Two more tries in the last five minutes put an unrealistic score on board.
Ft 14-38
Lymm played some of their best rugby of the season and competed well all game. Jake Ashall led the charge in the forwards aided by excellent defence from James Yates and John Long. It was a great team effort and one the players should be proud after last week’s efforts at Chester. Lymm travel to Fylde next week and will hope to put in another performance to keep their top 3 position in this competitive league.
On a final note a special mention must go to Dave Coon John Millington and Oli Brown who filled in in the front row and were on top in this department for most of the game.
