Eagles Dominate in High Scoring Match against Depleted Wilmslow

In a highly anticipated clash at Lymm, the Eagles faced Wilmslow 2s amid a backdrop of missing key players. Lymm were notably without power forward Max Ure, who was reportedly enjoying the sights of Benidorm, speedy winger Reece Forrest, who was braving the elements in Florida and regular prop Dave Coon who was enjoying the flesh pots of “That London”.

The Eagles were also missing the talents of Adam Halford and Mike Clarke who stepped up to support a depleted Lymm Second Team away at Blackburn. Also absent without leave was aging touch judge, scribe and report writer Pete Coon, so that this latter duty fell to the multi-talented and self-promoting, all round good guy Rick McEvoy (‘nuff said).

Despite these absences, the Eagles still managed to field a strong side. Unfortunately, Wilmslow arrived with just 14 players, prompting veteran Martin Henderson to don his boots for the day and have a run out for the opposition. Other Eagle’s subs also sportingly donned Wilmslow shirts when required during the match to help to make it a more competitive game.

Wlimslow won the toss to kick the match off and start the proceedings. Lymm wasted no time in asserting their dominance, advancing swiftly and creating an early two-man overlap, but Rhys Jones was unable to capitalize, failing to finish the chance. However, the Eagles soon found their rhythm. Kieran Williams opened the scoring with a well-timed try, followed by an impressive performance from Richard McEvoy, who scored twice and converted an impressive 14 out of 16 kicks throughout the match.

Lymm showcased a solid set piece, particularly in the lineout, which didn’t miss Max Ure thanks to the salmon-like skills of Jack Harper, who rose expertly to claim possession. This was complemented by a powerful display from the forwards, highlighted when captain Olly Brown propped for Wilmslow and found himself folded like a deckchair by the unstoppable pairing of Gavin Woods and Tom Baker, who, in a change to his normal position in the centres, seems to have finally found his home in the second row.

Thomas Graham proved unstoppable, bagging a hat-trick, while George “Ringo” Harrison matched him with a hat-trick of his own, showcasing a clinical edge in the final third. Jack Harper celebrated a milestone moment by scoring his first try in eight years, as the Wilmslow defence parted like the Red Sea, allowing him to cross the line with ease. Notably, Martin Henderson scored a lovely try for Wilmslow, following a beautiful assist from Lymm’s fly-half, Alan Reddecliff.

Reddecliff also made his mark by scoring a hat-trick of his own, demonstrating his playmaking abilities throughout the match. Josh McKean contributed significantly with two tries, and Gavin Woods rounded off the scoring with a try that capped a dominant performance.

In the end, Lymm Eagles delivered a resounding victory, demonstrating resilience and teamwork despite missing a few of their stars. The final score reflected their superior play, solidifying their place as a formidable force in the league. The Eagles will look to carry this momentum into their next fixture, with hopes of welcoming back their key players for a full-strength lineup.
