Cotton Traders Conference League B
Lymm travelled to Waterloo with a young side and were expecting a tough challenge, as the game at Beechwood had been a close affair. Conditions were dry with the pitch hard and a breeze blowing across the pitch.
Waterloo kicked off and Lymm allowed the ball to bounce which Waterloo took advantage by retaining possession and two phases later the Waterloo stand-off ghosted through some non-existent tackling, to score an unconverted try in the first minute. Things didn’t look good for Lymm but they took this as a wakeup call and started to string a number of breakdown rucks together and increase the pace of the game. Rory Power was breaking the line at will and after another break Will Baldwin drove for the line and off loaded to James Sherlock, who strolled in for a try, which Rory Power converted.
Lymm them realised that if they retained possession and moved the ball around, the gaps would appear and they ran in four quick tries from James Yates, Harry Aird, Rob Griffiths and Joe Dowdeswell, all converted by Rory Power.
In the five minutes before half time Lymm took the foot of the gas and started to force the play which led to mistakes and Waterloo took advantage to score two tries through weak tackling. Ht 17-35 At half time coach Peter Millachip emphasised going back to basics by retaining possession and keeping the pressure on the opposition. Almost immediately Lymm drove through the middle and Harry Aird darted in from 5 minutes for another converted try. It then became a procession as Waterloo struggled to contain the pace and power of the Lymm side who scored at will, with Will Leach 2, Rhys Lilley, Oli Brown Rory Power and Dave Coon scoring tries, Rory Power converting all but one.
This was a good performance from a Lymm side against a weakened Waterloo side who performed gamely but ultimately were over run. The half backs Rory Power and Harry Bird ran the show very well, making breaks and creating space for their forwards who ran strongly, none more than James Yates.
Lymm 2’s have one more league match away to league leaders Blackburn 2’s on Saturday 27th April KO 3pm. They are also in the Robinsons Brewery Cup Final on Saturday, 4th May KO 3.30pm at Oldham RUFC.
