ALL ON AN APRIL EVENING
Paddy Moran was our Captain and quietly confided to a few of the older mature players “ we were struggling to get a full team, so we’ve got these two young lads from the Colts”.
My mate, hooker Bill Clark (former club Hull & East Riding), same age as me, hiding his concerns bravely asserts, “ Jim we have enough experience to manage this lot, it’s only Ormskirk”. We need not have worried, this pair are now both deeply embedded in our club’s history.
Have you guessed yet? Here’s a clue. One was a long serving full back noted for his kicking from hand and off the grass, (no tees in those days) but not noted for his pace. Years later when the same player was making a cameo appearance on the Third Team, his dad (Sam) observed. “Yer know, our Graham hasn’t lost any speed.”
The other kid, playing at centre, treated us to side steps off both feet, good handling, mature judgement and all the rest that has been applauded over many years in venues way beyond Ormskirk.
It was definitely a two fags before a bath match for Bill and Jim and I think Wrighty scrounged one off us.
Postscript: We don’t see much of Graham Fox these days but brother Alan, when last seen says he is ok and playing golf. Good off the tee?
Bill Clark, died about 10 years ago. Saw him the last time we played York.
